Anti-Scam
Protect yourself against Internet fraud!
The vast majority of listings are posted by honest people and trust. So you can do excellent business. Despite this, it is important to follow a few common sense rules to prevent any attempt to scam.
Our Advice for Buyers
- Research the Seller: Check the seller’s profile, reviews, and ratings if available. Look for any red flags, such as negative feedback or a lack of information.
- Meet in Safe Locations: If possible, meet in public, well-lit places such as coffee shops or shopping centers. Avoid meeting at private residences or secluded areas.
- Verify Product Authenticity: If you are purchasing a high-value item, verify its authenticity by requesting original receipts or certificates.
- Use Secure Payment Methods: Opt for secure payment methods that offer buyer protection, such as credit cards or trusted online payment platforms (e.g., PayPal).
- Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off about the transaction or the seller, trust your instincts and consider walking away.
- Avoid Sharing Personal Information: Do not share sensitive personal information (like your home address or financial details) unless absolutely necessary.
- Request a Return Policy: Ask the seller about their return policy before making a purchase. This can protect you in case the product does not meet your expectations.
Our Advice for Sellers
- Screen Potential Buyers: Before agreeing to a sale, ask potential buyers for references or previous transaction history to ensure their credibility.
- Request Local Payment: Encourage buyers to pay in cash for in-person transactions. Avoid accepting checks, especially from unknown buyers.
- Document Transactions: Keep detailed records of all transactions, including receipts, invoices, and correspondence with the buyer.
- Avoid Shipping High-Value Items: If selling high-value items, prefer in-person transactions over shipping to minimize the risk of scams.
- Be Cautious with Unsolicited Offers: Be wary of unsolicited messages or offers that seem overly eager. Scammers often use this tactic to rush sellers into making quick decisions.
- Use Trackable Shipping Methods: If you must ship items, use shipping methods that provide tracking and delivery confirmation to protect against disputes.
- Verify Buyer’s Identity: Request additional identification or confirmation from buyers, especially for high-value transactions, to ensure legitimacy.
- Trust Your Gut: If a buyer seems overly aggressive, pushy, or if the deal seems suspicious, don’t hesitate to walk away from the transaction.
Recognizing and Reporting Scams
- Stay Informed: Keep up to date with common scams in your area or industry. Knowledge is your best defense against scams.
- Report Scams: If you suspect a scam or have been targeted, report it to the relevant authorities or the platform where the transaction occurred to help protect others.
